In Italy, the gelateria is not a daytime institution — it is an all-hours one. The passegiata, the evening walk taken after dinner in towns across the country, almost always ends at the gelato counter. A small cup. A cone if the mood is right. A slow walk home. The logic is sound: gelato is light enough to eat after a full meal, cold enough to close the palate cleanly, and flavourful enough to make the end of the evening feel like a genuine conclusion rather than an afterthought.

In London, this tradition has been slow to establish itself, partly because good gelato has been hard to find. The options that are open late tend to be the tourist-facing counters with industrial bases and fluorescent scoops. The quality does not suggest a ritual worth building.

Gelatone is trying to change this. We are open into the evening — and what we serve in the final hours of the day is made with the same care as what we serve at noon.

Gelato has a lower fat content than ice cream — typically between four and eight percent compared to ice cream's minimum of ten. It also contains less air: the churning process for gelato incorporates far less air than standard ice cream production, resulting in a denser, more substantial texture. The serving temperature is slightly warmer than ice cream, which allows the flavours to be more immediately expressive.

For a late-night dessert, these qualities are ideal. It is satisfying without being rich. It closes the palate. It ends the evening cleanly. A sorbet is even lighter — pure fruit and water, with nothing to weigh the digestion. Several of our visitors choose a sorbet specifically as a post-dinner dessert, after a full meal in Covent Garden or the surrounding area.

Covent Garden has a strong evening culture. The area's restaurants run late, the piazza has regular evening performances, and the proximity to the West End theatre district means a steady flow of visitors at nine, ten, eleven o'clock. Rose Street, where Gelatone is located, sits just off the main tourist circuit — quiet enough to be pleasant, accessible enough to be part of the evening's geography.

The experience of arriving at Gelatone in the evening is different from the midday rush. The light is lower. The choices have narrowed slightly as flavours sell through. There is something pleasingly finite about it: what remains is what remains, and it will be gone by tomorrow morning because we never carry over. This creates an urgency that is, in its own small way, completely in keeping with the rhythm of an evening out.

Late in the evening, we recommend either the Pistacchio di Bronte — our signature, always in production — or the current seasonal sorbet. Both are light. Both are distinctive. If you have eaten well, the sorbet is the cleaner choice. If you want something more substantial, the pistachio gelato rewards slow, attentive eating in a way that stands up to any dessert in central London.
